New Media and the Music Industry -- Intro

Technology and internet have facilitated the development and boosted the productivity for many industry in the 21st century. However, the Music industry has been almost "destroyed" by the invention of MP3 and its easy, no cost internet transmission. People's purchasing and listening behavior also changed from physical disc and players to digital content and online. In order for Music Industry to adapt to the new media and technology is crucial to its success, or even simply survive, in the future.

  1. I have to admit that I am one of those that are not supporting the music industry by buying music. I download music for free on tubidy.com. However, I'm curious to know how the singers still manage to make a lot of money :/
Let me know if you please

  2. I believe all of us has illegally downloaded music before, but you are one of the few who admit this. It's hard for singers survive on music sales now, so they have to seek other channel such as advertisement endorsement, tours and music licensing to film, TV show, video games etc...

  3. I think this topic is extremely important. People don't realize that the littlest thing such as downloading music online can effect another persons life. Do you think the fact that anything can be done to eventually make things the way they used to be as far as music sales?

    1. Well, I doubt it. We can start to educate people to respect interlectual property, but will take long time for the music sales to go up to where it used to be. However, music industry needs to seek new business model to increase revenue; such as music subscription service. Take Spotify for example, I totally see the trends that in the future people pay to listen to music rather than own the music.

  4. I think it's about time we destroyed the music industry. All music should be free and it's sad that artists are more concerned with actually making money then giving back to their fans. There are other ways to make revenue; touring, fan gear, commercials, etc... The music industry in a sense should be controlled by the listeners because we are the ones listening and supporting the artists at hand
